I spent election night editing articles from the field and posting them on Pavement Pieces  and headed home around 3 am.  I was half way homA raucous going on in front of Walgreens on 14th street and 4th Ave. lured me over.  About 50 people were gathered around newspaper holders that were being used as drums.  Girls were dancing on top of phone booths, trucks were honking their horns, and a petit Asian woman appeared out of no where with an impromptu violin solo.  New York had exploded over the excitement of Barack Obama's win.


A few hundred yards away in the heart of Union Square a similar scene was taking place when I heard the crowd begin to chant, "speech,  speech, speech."  Louis Ortiz had arrived.  He was dressed in a suit with a flag pin on his lapel.  He looked strikingly like Obama and the crowd went crazy for him.  Within five minutes the dozens of police lining the square dispersed the crowd, obviously concerned over the excitement Ortiz's presence might have lead to.   


Luckily, I caught up with and interviewed him before he headed home to the Bronx.  He is a 37-year-old Verizon employee who is looking forward to launching an acting career and has already signed with the talent agency, Ugly New York.  Last week, Ortiz auditioned for a guest spot on HBO's Flight of the Conchords.  Listen to his interview here.

My piece for The End of the Dial, "What We Talk About When We Talk About Hair" (mp3), got picked up by Magnum Photos for their series InSight America, "a collage of personal investigations and reflections that attempts to capture the things preoccupying Americans during the weeks leading to Election Day." Their photographers were at the Medusa Salon last week as well: Check out the cool images here.

As we were editing "What We Talk About ...", the news broke that the RNC  had spent $150,000 to outfit and accessorize Palin and her family. Slate magazine sent me to Saks Fifth Avenue that afternoon to see if I could figure out how, exactly, one spends that much money on clothes. The results of my experiment are here. The next day, I launched my pundit career with brief appearances on NPR's "Day to Day" and washingtonpost.com.

 I'll leave you with my favorite piece of tape from Medusa, which didn't make it into the final piece. Here's my interview with Brynn (mp3), a 9-year-old from Park Slope, Brooklyn. She's pretty darn exciting.

Buildings [New York] by sound artist Francisco López captured sound originating from multiple locations throughout New York City, which included windy, man-made landscapes of machine rooms, elevator shafts, and heating systems of office and residential buildings. In the concert, the room was dark, the audience blindfolded, and the sound project emitted from a multi-channel system. 

The festival continues on through Oct. 25.

The segment includes an interview with 60 Minutes' Andy Rooney on atheism, and "a total flagrant knockoff of NPR's  popular program Story Core."
The podcast is presented by two hosts, who also contribute stories and lively commentary. They mention that their program is unscripted, and that shows at times when the hosts are stumbling on a thought or looking for the right word.
